Autumn Withers is an American screenwriter and author of female-driven stories

Meet Autumn

Autumn fell head-over-heels with writing way before her first period. At six years old, she penned her first story about a girl who gets lost from her family and is befriended by “a tower of giraffes.” (Clearly, a dark comedy). She drew illustrations and used wrapping paper for her book art and cover. The staged reading was well reviewed by her entire collection of cabbage patch dolls and family dog, Tasia.

In second grade, when asked to select a pen-pal from a list of cities velcroed to a board, she picked a boy from Hollywood and wrote that she’d be there one day to tell “laugh-cry” stories. He wrote back that he wanted to be an eye doctor and then clarified that he lived in the Hollywood that was in Florida— he hoped that didn’t make her “too sad,” because he still wanted to watch and read her stories one day. To which Autumn hopes her pen-pal, and first supporter besides her mom, is still out there, happy and keeping eyeballs healthy.

After training at North Carolina School of the Arts, Autumn’s storytelling journey led her to New York City then Los Angeles, performing on stage, Broadway, and acting across television and film for nearly two decades, before returning full circle to writing.

Autumn has penned eight television pilots and three feature films. She writes solo and also works with two different writing partners.

Autumn and Broadway lyricist/novelist, Ryann Ferguson, are perhaps the only female writing team to be matchmade by their parents, who were committed hippies together in the 70s. Their slate of female-centric content ranges from biting female comedy to historical adaptation to psychological thriller and has seen options and various commendations from Screencraft, Austin Film Festival, and HBO.

Autumn also collaborates with screenwriter Darren O’Hare. Their first comedy pilot was a semi-finalist at Sundance Episodic Lab. Autumn and Darren speak fluent rom-com and have two more in development.

Her latest screenplay is a feel-good, family holiday movie with a magical twist! (Secretly, Autumn loves all things Christmas. She blames three years of high kicking as a Radio City Rockette— she knows this will be the standout point you’ll remember from this looooooong bio. She forgives you.)

On random occasion, Autumn pens and records essays for her audio series, We’re All Doing Better Than We Think. She believes there is bioluminescence in the darkest places and that humor is holy. Subscribe to receive new posts.

In the back of her closet, collecting dust, is a B.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Georgia, which says Summa Cum Laude. Autumn is the founder of the Hollywood Women's Collective, which had a vibrant run of empowering creatives and entrepreneurs via industry collaborations, goal groups, charitable causes, guest speakers, and live events.

Recently, Autumn traded her suburban New Jersey garden for a Paris apartment with a balcony that is too small to stand or sit. But being a writer in Paris with her artist husband, wondrous daughter, and untrained rescue dog in tow, is a pretty lovely midlife renaissance. So far, she still pinches herself when la Tour Eiffel twinkles.

Autumn’s debut novel, a steamy romantic dramedy set across France, will be released in 2025!

“Withers has a gift for writing wildly relatable stories about life’s bumps with grace, candor and humor.”
